The Curriculum

The over 2s

The six Early learning goals devised by the DCSF(Department of children, schools and famililes) are targets which children are expected to meet by the time they reach the compulsory school age of five (approx). Our Curriculum is formed using the Foundation Stage framework provided by the Authority.

Essentially the six areas of learning and development are met using Montessori methods and use of the EYFS.

Personal Social and Emotional Development will involve Practical Life Exercises, which teaches important life skills, courtesy, self confidence and relationships.

Communication Language and Literacy will be covered through all the activities we provide but, will also involve the use of Montessori techniques. Using Phonics and didactic resources children will learn to recognize, form letters, words and sentences. The process of reading is learnt gradually using simple to complex Montessori exercises, verbal action and sound games.

PSRN(Problem Solving Reasoning and numeracy). This involves mathematical development which is based on a child’s previous knowledge.

Knowledge and Understanding of the world and Creative Development will be taught through Cultural studies, which include History, Biology, Geography, Art and Drama. It is important for children to understand that there are countries, continents and cultures other than their own. This is taught through monthly projects and the use of Montessori apparatus.

Physical development is important for a child's well being. We aim not just to develop gross and fine motor movement but promote a healthy life-style. We have a large garden which is used for regular play times and educational purposes. Practical Life activities provide exercises to develop fine motor movement whilst outdoor and indoor activities develop gross motor movement. Including balancing, jumping and low level climbing games.

Assessment is through observations and what children are able to do. Observations are used to plan activities based on their interests and developmental requirements. A formal written report in produced annually.

ICT(Information and communications technology) is used to reinforce children’s learning in some of the areas above.

Pre school children take part in Spanish lessons for half an hour per week. As a 2nd language is to be compulsory in primary schools. This is an important addition to our curriculum. Please view www.blahblahlanguages.co.uk for information on Ms Sanchez our Spanish teacher and the curriculum.

We have half an hour of dance each week for children aged 2-5. Please see www.aimhighacademy.co.uk for further information on the dance teacher Ms Hayley Rea and her classes.
